Course Description
In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research. This course takes a process-based approach to developing academic writing and critical reading skills. Students practice generating ideas, drafting, and revising to communicate effectively across audiences and purposes. Working with both low-stakes assignments and formal academic genres such as synthesis-driven arguments, literature reviews, and analytical essays, students develop analytical and collaborative skills through active engagement in the writing process. Students transform writing between scholarly and popular modes while integrating diverse sources as evidence. Through structured peer review and instructor feedback, students develop reading and revision strategies for writing across disciplines. The course includes multiple formal writing assignments totaling 5000 words. Notes: Prior to Common Course Numbering, this course was known as ENGL V01A. Course Description
Prepares the student to render pre-hospital basic life support at the scene of an emergency, during transport of the sick, injured or during inter-facility transfer. Applies the theory of patient assessment and emergency care presented in skills lab setting in a mock casualty emergency situation. Provides skills training and clinical experience in an emergency room and/or on an emergency vehicle. Materials Fee: There is a materials fee for this course. The fee varies based on market value. Corequisites: EMT M01. Recommended Prep: NS M19. Transfer credit: CSU. Notes: Successful completion of this course and EMT M01 will prepare the student to take the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) Basic Exam (providing all other state requirements are met); students are required to bring a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) CPR card to the first day of class to remain enrolled in the class; due to clinical facility requirements, students must be 18 years old by the first day of class; evidence of current health insurance and clearance of health appraisal, background check, and drug screening are required prior to clinical rotations and for continued enrollment in the course. The course provides exploration of physiological bases of behavior. Topics include: neural impulses and sensory processes, neural basis of reinforcement, electrical stimulation of the brain, memory, learning, emotion, biofeedback, split-brain studies, and research on right and left hemispheres.
