This course provides training and practice in basic principles of effective oral communication through participation in public speaking, group discussion, and oral reading. It emphasizes being at ease in front of, and with, a group, and developing constructive attitudes, organized thinking, proper use of voice and body, and critical listening. In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research. Credit will not be awarded for both the honors and regular versions of a course. Credit will be awarded only for the first course completed with a grade of C or “P” or better. This corequisite support course provides additional help and support for ESL students enrolled in ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing. The course will provide support instruction in areas of the ENGL C1000 curriculum where students tend to require more attention. It will allow for more concentrated efforts on the core elements of ENGL C1000 for the second language learner. Field trips may be required. Corequisites: ENGL C1000. Transfer credit: CSU.
