This course introduces students to fundamental concepts of procedural programming. Topics include data types, control structures, functions, arrays, files, and the mechanics of running, testing, and debugging. The course emphasizes good software engineering principles and developing fundamental programming skills using a high level language utilizing programming and practical hands-on problem solving techniques. This course is the first course in programming that is compliant with the standards of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Field trips may be required. Recommended Prep: CS V09. In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research. Emphasizes expository writing and research, demonstrating principles of thesis and support, rhetorical organization, control of diction, clear sentence and paragraph construction, and command of the conventions of English usage. Develops analytical and interpretive reading skills. Field trips may be required. Prerequisites: Placement as determined by the college's multiple measures assessment process.
