Course Description
This course provides study of literature combined with instruction in critical thinking and composition. The course emphasizes understanding and writing about literature using principles of logical analysis, criticism, advocacy of ideas, and inductive and deductive reasoning. Students will examine assumptions upon which conclusions are based and recognize common logical errors of language and thought. Instruction is offered in advanced elements of style and organization. Application of critical thinking skills and logical methodology to the various literary genres will achieve a disciplined understanding of the material. Credit will not be awarded for both the honors and regular versions of a course. Credit will be awarded only for the first course completed with a grade of C or “P” or better. This course provides an introduction to the fundamental technical and aesthetic principles of film and media digital photography. Students are instructed in practical training in the use of cameras, with an introduction to image control through exposure, lighting, and selection of camera, lenses, and filters. Students learn practical and theoretical elements of cinematography with an emphasis on lighting and camera technique. Technical topics include camera operation, composition, HD video basics, and camera settings including ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focus, and focal length. Lighting basics include working with both indoor and outdoor lighting, using professional light kits, and lighting accessories (flags, gels, cookies, filters), as well as important information of lighting safety. The course also offers an examination of the cinematographer as a visual storyteller to develop a broader understanding of the balance between artist and technician as well as an examination of the different crew positions and processes of the camera crew. Field trips may be required. Transfer credit: CSU.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, this course introduces students to the field of Ethnic Studies, focusing on the historical and contemporary experiences of Native Americans, Chicana/o and Latina/o/x Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans. Special attention is given to systems of oppression foregrounding race and ethnicity, including histories and legacies of settler colonialism and indigenous dispossession, militarized capitalism, chattel slavery and coerced labor, immigration and citizenship laws, and artistic and intellectual expressions. In addition, students will be introduced to the activism and cultural production of those groups in the struggle for social justice, self-determination, and political representation. The course will provide a foundation for understanding the major contributions of historically aggrieved racialized groups and communities that have challenged the status quo in a racist society.
