This course presents an overview of the disciplines of community and public health. Topics include the basic concepts and terminologies of public health; an overview of various public health professions and organizations; the study, prevention and control of diseases in the community; the analysis of the social determinants of health; strategies for eliminating disease, illness, and health disparities among various populations; community organizing and health promotion programming; school health promotion; environmental health and safety; and an overview of the healthcare delivery system in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the development of knowledge and preliminary skills to serve as an effective advocate for community and public health. Field trips may be required. This Western Concert Dance History course explores the artistic developments in the field of Eastern European and Western concert dance forms from the15th century to the present time. The course focuses on the cultural, social and political topics of Ballet, Modern/Postmodern, Jazz, Tap and Musical theater. With a strong underpinning of how cultural diasporas have influenced and shaped concert dance forms. Through readings, lectures, discussions, and extensive viewing of film/video and live performance, students come to understand the rich lineage of these dance forms. Field trips may be required. This course presents a survey and analysis of United States history from the colonial period through Reconstruction with an emphasis on the role of Native American Indian / indigenous American peoples. The course emphasizes basic social, political, economic and intellectual concepts and developments of the country in general and the impact of and on Native American peoples in particular.
