Chicana/o Studies

The Chicana/o Studies Program was developed in response to the educational needs of Mexican American and Latino students attending Oxnard College. The program is designed to provide students with an awareness of the social, historical, psychological, and cultural realities of the Chicana/o in American society. An interdisciplinary program, Chicana/o Studies courses offer a Chicana/o perspective within the traditional disciplines of Sociology, History, Psychology, and Anthropology.
The purpose of the Chicano(a) Studies Program is to prepare students with an ability to think critically, analytically, and creatively about the Chicano(a) experience in the local and global society. Which includes comprehensive knowledge of the history and culture of the Chicano(a) in the United States. Students will also, gain an awareness of the major theories and concepts that explain the life experiences of the Chicano(a.)
