The Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees and Chancellor Bernard Luskin met with over 30 community leaders and senior staff at the Ventura County Office of Education Services Center in Camarillo on Monday evening, November 2, 2015, to discuss the state and future of the District.

Following a warm welcome by Chair Dianne McKay and introductions of Vice Chair Larry Kennedy, Trustees Stephen Blum, Arturo Hernández, Bernardo Perez, and Student Trustee Ilse Maymes, Chancellor Luskin explained that, “Media, technology, and instant communication continue to transform our county.  Community colleges must respond with innovative approaches to guide students’ success in existing and emerging fields such as fire science, dental hygiene, automotive, and robotics.”  Luskin added, “Our District is unique in that Ventura College, Oxnard College, and Moorpark College serve all of Ventura County.  There is a college within driving distance of every student.  The VCCCD is in a perfect position to lead change and partner with local organizations to boost our economy through education and training.  This is not a time to be timid; it is time to support new programs and partnerships.”  Luskin highlighted that, “Our collaborations with CSUCI, CLU, the Ventura County Office of Education, and the many county school districts are among the best in the nation.  We have recently raised more than $70 million for joint projects such as VC Innovates, Achieve the Dream, and in our countywide P-20 partnership.”

Energetic discussion with Community Advisory Council members revealed interest in topics such as Dual and Concurrent Enrollment, Media and Technology, STEM, and more. The ranging conversation included exploring and expanding program opportunities for students, outreach to parents and businesses, and raising the profile of community colleges.  “The Trustees and I appreciate the valuable input we are getting from our community leaders,” said Luskin.  “The Citizens Advisory Council provides unique insight, guidance, and expertise from which the District and students will benefit as we plan the future of community colleges in Ventura County.”
