VCCCD would like you to get to know the staff and faculty who contribute their time, talent & education to the success of our students. We will regularly highlight employees across all four campuses, sharing their professional expertise, their educational path, and a few fun facts about them.

Name: Cheryl Manley

Position: Payroll Supervisor

What does that entail? Issuing paychecks to all classes of VCCCD employees—totaling over 3,500 per year—payroll taxes, and all the myriad duties it takes to accomplish this with my staff of four.

How long have you worked for the district? My date of hire is October 23, 2001, so it will soon be my 19th work anniversary with VCCCD. I started when my son was six months old. He is now in his second year at Ventura College and planning to go to Northern Arizona University or the University of New Mexico in fall 2021. I started as a payroll technician, was promoted to senior payroll tech, and then finally to supervisor.

Were you a student at one of the district’s colleges and if so which one? What was your major and your degree? I attended VC and Oxnard College, but did not pursue a degree at either college.

Are you from the area and if not where are you from? I grew up in Michigan and moved to California at the age of 16. What a culture shock!

Share something personal about yourself: My son is 19 and going to college. We have two kittens. I read a lot of mystery books and enjoy music, especially R&B and smooth jazz.

What do you find rewarding about your job or career? I know that I play an important role for every employee we have on staff who teaches our students and our future leaders. I’m proud of the work our office is able to produce and am blessed to work with a huge group of really great people.

Two words to describe yourself: Caring, Funny

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what? I used to do a lot of volunteer work when my son played sports. However, since the pandemic, that has stopped. I’m hopeful that life can resume back to normal someday, but in the meantime I’m looking for opportunities.

Cheryl Manley with son.
