Amparo Medina, Student Success & Support Specialist II and OC Classified Senate President

Position:  Student Success & Support Specialist II and OC Classified Senate President

What does that entail?

I have several projects going on which are exciting to be a part of.  I am working on building a Teacher Pathway for college students interested in becoming a K-12 teacher, with emphasis on STEM teacher pathways.  I am also facilitating our Student Peer Mentoring Program as well as our Cascading Mentoring Program which matches students with an Oxnard College employee.  My “extra” position as Classified Senate President fills my days with meetings and making sure the Classified voice is included in the decision-making process both at the college and at the District.

How long have you worked for the District?

I started at Oxnard College in August 2015 in the Educational Assistance Center as an Administrative Assistant.  From there I was promoted to a Senior Administrative Assistant for the VP of Business Services and most recently, in July, I moved over to the STEM Department into my current position.

Were you a student at one of the District’s colleges and if so which one?  What was your major and your degree?

While I did not obtain my degree through VCCCD, I occasionally enroll in courses that allow me to continue learning professionally and academically, such as American Sign Language and accounting. I received my bachelor’s degree in American studies from UC Berkeley and my master’s degree in educational counseling from the University of La Verne.

Are you from the area and if not where are you from?

My family is originally from Oxnard, but I grew up in Sacramento.  I used to tell myself that I would never move back here.  I loved the city life and didn’t know how to manage in small towns.  I ended up moving back here seven years ago, and I could not be happier.  I realize I am at a time in my life where I can appreciate everything our community has to offer.

Share something personal about yourself:

I am the mom to three boys.  My oldest just turned 22 and then I have a 16-year-old and 14-year-old.  Prior to the pandemic, my life revolved around their sports and dance competitions (my youngest dances with a hip-hop group).  I am completely enjoying the stillness that has taken over our household, but I am looking forward to being able to watch them pursue their passions again.

What do you find rewarding about your job or career?

Being able to support the needs of Oxnard College students as they navigate their journey and watching them graduate fills my heart with gratitude.  Not only that, I find myself fortunate to work with so many wonderful people who continue to push me in so many ways.

Two words to describe yourself:

Mom, Dedicated

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what

I find joy in being of service to others.  I have previously volunteered at my church.  I’ve been a volunteer through Sister Cities and I’ve volunteered through my sons’ extra-curricular activities.
